6 Different Types of Sex Toys and Their Uses

Sex toys are things you may not often talk about but have probably crossed your mind. Once considered taboo, they are welcomed into the bedroom to enhance fun and pleasure in the sexual experience.

Everyone has their desires and erogenous zones, and depending on the type of sexual play and pleasure you are seeking, there is a toy for that. Remember, you get to decide where the boundaries lie. Sex toys are great as long as you are curious and have a sense of sexual adventure. You can sample a variety of devices at a sex toy store, picking out an assortment of items.

Not sure where to start? Here are the most common types of sex toys on the market.

Type #1: Outside Stimulation

This category is for our external body parts, and many people find pleasure from head to toe. For our purposes, we are mainly sticking to genitalia. These are the sex toys that stimulate our outies.

Type #2: Clitoral Stimulators

The clitoris is a part of the sexual organs that are mainly inside the body, wrapping around the vulva and a spongy head that sticks out at the top of the inner labia. It is highly sensitive, with the most nerve ending in the body and gets swollen when aroused. Sex toys for the clit come in several varieties:

Vibrator Wand

A wand vibrator is a hand-held device with a handle and a vibrating head end. There are usually different settings for vibrating patterns, so you can find the one that does the trick, and they can help people reach orgasm faster than manual stimulation. Most plug into the wall or have a USB jack to charge up, and then they are good to go. Very simple in design and very effective. Other vibrators can attach to the finger, be held in the palm and even resemble lipstick.

Clit Suction Toys

For an even faster climax, there are clit suction devices that provide vibration but add another feature; suction. They are designed with a cap that fits over the clit to form a seal, and air flows around with suction to provide stimulation. It is like getting oral sex, but you control the device to get it in the perfect position, and it doesn’t get tired or slow down until you reach orgasm.

Cock Rings

These toys are made to trap blood in the penis, so an erection lasts longer. They go around the base of the penis before it becomes fully erect and then stay in position to make the penis harder and delay orgasm, making it more intense.

Some are stretchy, while others are solid, and some even have a vibrating function to stimulate the clitoris during penetration.

Type #3: Inside Stimulation

Now we also have toys that are inserted or that you insert into to provide sexual pleasure. These include:

Dildos are phatic-shaped toys designed to mimic a penis and used for vaginal and anal penetration. They come in various shapes and sizes, made from plastic, glass or stainless steel. Some are double-headed and have automatic thrust as well. Some dildos fit into a harness to be strapped on to penetrate your partner.

Type #4: G-Spot & A-Spot Toys

Similar to dildos, these toys are shaped to curve into the vagina and rub against the front wall, where clitoral tissues are, and this can help produce an orgasm through penetration. They also come in many shapes and sizes and can include the vibration. The A-spot is deeper inside, near the end of the vaginal tube.

Anal Plug An anal plug is meant to be inserted into the anus to stimulate the area and the prostate. It usually has a flared base to it doesn’t disappear inside and provides a handle to help direct stimulation.

Anal Beads These also get inserted inside the anus, a string of beads designed to stimulate the sphincter as they are inserted and removed. They usually will graduate in size with the smallest first, and you can go as far as you want. This can trigger an orgasm when pulled out or along with genital stimulation.

Type #5: Cock Sleeve

This is technically an outside stimulator on a penis, but it is included here because it is used by inserting your penis inside. There are many types, from a simple sleeve or pocket vagina to vibrating and massaging options and partial and full torsos that mimic the human body.

Rabbit Vibrator This toy has an internal vibrating shaft and an external clit stimulator for combined stimulation.

Type #6: Impact Toys

These are the sex toys that stimulate other erogenous zones around the body besides the genitals. This play can range from tickling to hitting and anywhere between. They include:

  • Blindfolds
  • Feather ticklers
  • Whips
  • Riding crops
  • Nipple clamps
  • Restraints
  • Gags

Other devices may fall into the BDSM category and may provide erotic pain along with pleasure.

Even e-devices can be activated through a remote device or app and give electrical stimulation on a patch or in underwear. Sex furniture and swings can also enhance sexual play through assisted positioning.

These are the types of sex toys to enhance your sexual adventures. Experiment and explore according to your comfort level; you may find a few new toys to take to bed.
